HLTHPS007 Administer and monitor medications
Course Overview
NTA’s nationally accredited unit of competency provides the skills and knowledge required to administer medications to people and monitor them, as per the delegation from a relevant health professional, in accordance with legislation and the employing organisation’s medication and delegation policies and practice.
This course applies to community services and health workers with the relevant authority in their state or territory to administer medication and monitor them as per the delegation from a relevant health professional.
Ongoing requirements to demonstrate competency in drug calculations may apply, and users should refer to relevant state/territory regulatory requirements. The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.
Learner outcomes (what will participants learn?)
- Identify situations that are a potential risk to the safe administration of medications
- Prepare for medication administration
- Identify and prepare the client for administration of medication
- Administer medications within legal parameters
- Monitor client response to administered medication
- Handle medication contingencies
- Complete medication distribution and administration

Support workers, AINs and Team leaders in aged care, disability and community settings.

Course Delivery structure
This course is delivered in a blended mode, primarily made up of:
Recommended Self paced Learning (online)- 45 hours
Practical simulation Training face-face organised at NTA Burwood campus- 8 hours
Work placement arranged by NTA – 24 hours (3 days)
Assessments- 6 hours

Pre-requisite
- Language, Literacy and Numeracy requirements
- Certificate III in Individual support and/or relevent industry experience in medication
